Next Generation 3D Cube Lightbox

Take this simple garden decoration/accessory and turn it into an easily adjustable lightbox for students with complex developmental profiles including visual impairment. Unlike a traditional lightbox, this cube has 5 illuminated surfaces. There are 15 colour options and four effect modes (flash, strobe, fade, and smooth) that are selected using a remote control. LED brightness can also be adjusted to suit student needs or ambient lighting conditions. 

The cube is rechargeable, water-resistant and lightweight. It can be easily positioned on tables, shelves, desks, etc. for students using wheelchairs or other mobility devices. For younger students, the cube can function as a light table given its height (40 centimetres) and could be used to motivate movement and pulling to stand.

To integrate the 3D Cube Lightbox into literacy programming, images and designs from preferred stories can be printed on transparencies and then affixed to one or several of the faces of the cube. Many traditional lightbox materials can be used with the 3D Cube Lightbox or adapted for use (e.g., APH Swirly Mats, overlays). 

Potential uses for the 3D Cube Lightbox include:

  • An evaluation tool for visual attention, fixation, contrast sensitivity, etc. as part of a comprehensive Functional Vision Assessment.
  • As a salient landmark when planning and executing indoor travel routes as part of an Orientation and Mobility lesson.

A limited number of 3D Cube Lightboxes are available from PRCVI on a short-term loan. These cubes are relatively inexpensive ($130-$180) and can be purchased through online retailers such as Amazon or Wayfair.

I have been fortunate to learn and grow with students with visual impairments since 2007, working as a teacher of students with visual impairments (TSVI), Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) and most recently as the Program Manager of PRCVI and ARC-BC. I completed a PhD in Special Education at the University of British Columbia in 2017 where my research focused on the administrative determinants of workloads for itinerant TSVIs.   

One of my favourite aspects of my current role is delivering outreach support to my colleagues and their students from across British Columbia. I've been fortunate to have many exciting adventures in schools and communities across the province and I hope you enjoy following along through #outreaching!

When I'm not on the road, I enjoy learning to play the violin, collecting antique books, and spending time surrounded by trees.
