On October 15-16, 2018, Dr. Lieberman joined us in Surrey for two days of professional learning on adaptive physical education for students with visual impairments, including those with complex, multiple needs.

Including Children with Visual Impairments or Deafblindness into Physical Education: A Universal Design Approach (link to Powerpoint presentation)

Photo shows Dr. Lieberman holding a microphoneOn Monday, October 15 Dr. Lieberman presented on the impact of visual impairment on access to physical education and instructional/assessment considerations for inclusive sports and recreation for students with visual impairments. Dr. Lieberman also introduced Camp Abilities - a week-long educational sports camp that runs at locations all over the world. After lunch, Dr. Lieberman modeled these instructional strategies with a group of students with visual impairments in a gym at a nearby elementary school.

Photo shows teachers demonstrating an adaptive sport in a gymnasiumOn Tuesday, October 16 Dr. Lieberman looked in detail at instructional and assessment approaches for physical education with students with complex multiple exceptionalities. The morning presentation covered topics including universal design for learning (UDL) applied to physical education, positioning, engagement from wheelchairs, and strategies for paraeducators and peer tutors. After lunch, the workshop shifted back over to a local elementary school where students with visual impairments and additional exceptionalities demonstrated a series of adapted gym activities.
